Steve Bilynskyj’s Home Page
Welcome! I am happy to share a bit about myself. Perhaps in God’s providence we will meet sometime.
March 1, 2025 update: I am half-Ukrainian (hence the “j” at the end of my name) and I am sickened by our U.S. president’s betrayal and abandonment of Ukraine, and his and the vice-president’s attempted humiliation of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. May God bring swift judgment on this U.S. administration and its Russian allies, and may our Lord bring swift deliverance to the people of Ukraine.
About me:
I am a retired pastor living in Eugene, Oregon.
My interests include fly-fishing and philosophy (I have a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Notre Dame). When not fishing, or philosophizing, I can often be found reading, working at the computer, or relaxing with my family.
When I was a pastor I wrote a blog post each week as I prepared a sermon in order to start thinking about the text and to invite comments. Here are those old posts.
Favorite books:
Some of my favorites are (in no particular order):
A Canticle for Leibowitz, Walter M. Miller, Jr.
The Supper of the Lamb, Robert Farrar Capon
The River Why, David James Duncan
The Lord of the Rings, J. R. R. Tolkien
A Community of Character, Stanley Hauerwas
The Art of Pastoring, David Hansen
Orthodoxy, G. K. Chesterton
Hard Times, Charles Dickens
Writing:
Occasionally, I have written something besides a sermon:
Christian Ethics and the Ethics of Virtue
What in the World Is God Doing?
Grace and Free-will – Three Debates
A Covenant Dialogue on Baptism (with Stephen Pitts)
